Jed received an honorary doctorate after making a generous donation to a local college, and the family celebrated him as if he were a genuine physician. However, their enthusiasm was dampened by Granny's reaction; she bristled at the notion of Jed being considered a "real" doctor, especially given her own lack of higher education. Determined to prove herself, Granny embarked on an earnest, though ultimately unsuccessful, pursuit of a college degree.
