Mr. Pinckney, newly employed as the Drysdale’s butler, discovered his efforts to refine the Clampetts into paragons of high society were entirely fruitless. He departed abruptly, intending to return home to England. Simultaneously, the Clampetts, under the impression that he was a boarder, resented his sudden departure. They resolved to maintain the boarding house, but with a significant alteration: payment would now be required in advance.
