Lafe returned and managed to persuade Mr. Drysdale to offer him a position as nightwatchman at the bank, responsible for safeguarding the Clampetts’ funds. When Mr. Drysdale mentioned that only a portion of the money was held at the bank, Lafe surmised that the Clampetts must have buried the rest in their backyard. He hurried back home and feigned construction of a root cellar for Granny, while secretly searching the property for the hidden cash.
