Lafe Crick, a familiar acquaintance from back home, exploited Jed’s generosity and devised plans to profit from the Clampetts' newfound fortune. He cleverly persuaded Mr. Drysdale to offer him a position at the bank, ostensibly to safeguard Jed’s funds. However, upon discovering that the bulk of Jed's money wasn't housed within the bank walls, Lafe became convinced that Jed had secreted his wealth in a burial spot somewhere behind the mansion.
