Fred arrived home to an unexpected tableau: Lamont and his drama teacher, Marilyn, were enacting a choking scene from "Othello." The performance prompted in Fred a swift, unsettling conclusion – that Lamont was attempting to harm a white woman. Later that evening, Fred himself became the subject of misinterpretation. Invited to Marilyn’s home with Lamont, he and his friend were met with suspicion by her parents, who mistakenly believed they were planning a robbery.
