Fred avoided paying his bills, tossing them in the wastebasket with a practiced air of innocence, insisting they had never reached him. He prolonged the inevitable as long as possible. Eventually, however, he began to receive notices, stark and uncompromising, warning of service disconnection – gas, electricity, and other essential utilities – and the seizure of his belongings should he fail to remit payment.
