Ricky requested a salary increase, but his supervisor, Gale Gordon, denied his request. Determined to demonstrate Ricky’s considerable popularity, Lucy devised a plan. She orchestrated a series of false reservations at the club for the night another act was scheduled, then appeared in various disguises – including Fred, in drag – expressing theatrical outrage that Ricky wasn't performing. She would then depart in a dramatic huff.
