A peculiar lightness had settled over Lamont. He drifted through the house, humming melodies and greeting everyone with an almost unsettling cheerfulness. Grady and Fred exchanged knowing glances; they were certain the boy was smitten. Fred discovered that Lamont was planning to propose to a girl who worked at a dress shop. Intrigued, he went to meet her, only to be taken aback by the reality of the situation: she was a woman at least a decade older than Lamont.
