In a golfing contest, Mr. Howell suffered a devastating loss, parting with three million dollars to Gilligan. Seeking recourse, Mr. Howell then managed to persuade Gilligan to trade for a worthless oil well he possessed. When news broke over the radio that the well had struck oil – a veritable gusher – Mr. Howell’s ambition turned toward reclaiming it. Yet, just as he achieved his goal and won the well back, the same radio broadcast corrected the earlier report: the gusher had been an error.
