Ray felt a wave of shame wash over him upon encountering a woman he’d once dated, a quarter-century prior, and whom he now believed he had treated poorly. Seeing Elizabeth again stirred in Ray a deep sense of guilt; he was convinced his behavior on their high school date had been improper, and he resolved to offer an apology. Yet, when he learned the true reason behind Elizabeth’s acceptance of that long-ago invitation, he instantly regretted reopening old wounds.
