Withnail & I (1987)

Synopsis

This comedy-drama follows two unemployed actors, Marwood and Withnail, as they struggle to survive in their dilapidated flat. They drift between job center visits and the local pub, dreaming of a countryside escape. They accidentally book a holiday at Monty's rural house – Monty being Withnail’s flamboyant uncle – and begin an unexpected trip. The English countryside offers a stark contrast to their hopes: constant rain, boredom, and strange, unwelcoming locals. Their attempts at relaxation are derailed by a series of humorous and chaotic events, deepening their disillusionment with life and work. Withnail's sharp wit and Marwood's growing anxiety offer a moving look at friendship, ambition, and the challenges artists face in a difficult world during this odd adventure.
