The Rookie (2002)

Synopsis

Twelve years ago, a shoulder injury ended Jim Morris's pitching career after he never reached the major leagues from the minor leagues. Now a high-school chemistry teacher and baseball coach in Texas with a family, Jim makes a deal with his team: if they win the district championship, he'll try out for a major league organization. Motivated by the bet, the team improves dramatically, reaching the state championship for the first time. Jim, compelled to fulfill his promise, initially struggles at the tryout. However, on the mound, he surprises everyone, including himself, with blazing fastballs, earning a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Though a long road remains to the major leagues, Jim's big-league dreams are rekindled, opening up possibilities for his future.
