Synopsis

This film recounts Takasugi Shinsaku's recollections of his influential teacher, Yoshida Shoin. Shoin (1830-1859) was a leading intellectual during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. He dedicated himself to training many Ishin Shishi, who were instrumental in the Meiji Restoration. Several of his students, including Takasugi and Itō Hirobumi, later achieved prominence, and nearly all of Shoin's students became officers in the new Meiji government. Takasugi commanded rifle units in the failed 1864 attempt to seize Chōshū, a pivotal event that accelerated the Tokugawa shogunate's collapse. Itō Hirobumi became Japan's first prime minister. One of Shoin’s admirers, Maebara Issei, was later executed for rebelling against the Meiji regime and is now honored in Tokyo.
