This adaptation of P.G. Wodehouse’s romantic comedy feels strangely still. Joan Fontaine plays Lady Alyce, an heiress who happens to encounter visiting dancer and composer Fred Astaire as “Jerry” during a trip to London. Their courtship begins to develop (though excitement was perhaps expressed differently in 1937), much to the disapproval of her wealthy family at their historic Tottney Castle. With assistance from George Burns, his publicist ("George"), and Gracie Allen, his secretary (“Gracie”), who provide a serviceable if not particularly memorable contrast to the somewhat predictable jokes, he continues to pursue her affections. Astaire’s dancing—nearly all performed by himself—showcases his talent and the quality of the Gershwin score; however, these individual dance numbers don't quite connect. It isn’t simply that Ginger Rogers is absent; it’s a matter of there being no one else to share the stage. The few scenes with Fontaine hint at what could have been (though she wouldn't be as skilled as his more well-known partner), but ultimately this feels like a solo performance, and for me, it highlighted some weaknesses in Astaire’s acting ability. It's pleasant enough entertainment, and there's no question that songs such as "Put Me to the Test" and "Nice Work if You Can Get It" are catchy, yet the dance sequences resemble more of a rehearsal than an exuberant display, and the entire production simply misses something—a certain spark.
