Synopsis

Inspector Jouin found himself unexpectedly drawn to Jeanne Chauvin, a young lawyer of considerable spirit who, despite lacking the ability to practice independently, served as an assistant to Master Weidmann in the Jewish quarter of La Vilette. Jeanne, in turn, resolved to assist him with the Berger case. Meanwhile, Meg received Madame Lépine, the prefect's wife, at home; the latter’s fondness for elaborate fantasies was well known to Commissioner Puybaraud.
