This is exactly the sort of program my dad (may he rest) would have enjoyed, and so would young me—for very similar reasons. The show succeeded in creating a believable setting, one with considerable depth. As a kid, I would have been completely absorbed by it, just as my father was later in life. It presents numerous species and cultures that exist alongside each other, and there's an undeniable pleasure to be found in that. There’s also something nice about taking the time to explain all of it to others who haven’t seen it before. However, I do have a few degrees; my studies included history, and I’ve consumed plenty of science fiction (to the point of obsession), as well as comic books. By the time I encountered this show, I already had countless similar worlds swirling around in my mind, requiring constant attention. While it was diverting, ultimately what bothered me was that it added yet another complicated world to manage. I watched it intermittently during visits with my father, and while I did find it enjoyable, even more significant is the fact that I understand why it held such appeal for him, and I fully respect anyone who loved it.
