Synopsis

David Attenborough explores two remarkable examples of evolutionary success: the bird’s egg and the tortoise's formidable shell. An ostrich egg is so robust that a person can stand upon it without causing it to crack – yet how does the developing chick manage to escape from such a sturdy enclosure? The evolution of the tortoise shell remained an enigma for many years, and this bony armor provides far more than mere protection.
