At Stokes's invitation, Nicholas would be absent for the evening, leaving the house vulnerable. Taking advantage of this, Barnabas went to the residence with the intention of killing Eve. Yet, she was nowhere to be seen; instead, Angelique was present, concealed and poised for an attack.
