Synopsis

The mechanism of smell begins with the release of minuscule molecules from objects into the surrounding air. When these enter the nasal passages, they dissolve in the mucus lining. Certain molecules then interact with specialized receptors located on the olfactory membranes. Each nostril possesses a membrane roughly the size of a postage stamp, densely populated with millions of receptor cells poised to transmit signals to the brain regarding the inhaled molecules.
