Saturday Night Live — Season 13
The 1987-88 television season saw Saturday Night Live embark on its thirteenth run, airing on NBC between October 1987 and February 1988. A couple of familiar faces joined the ranks: Kevin Nealon officially became a repertory player, and Al Franken made his return to the cast. However, this season wasn't without significant challenges. Just before the premiere, a fire near Studio 8H disrupted dress rehearsal, threatening to shut down the entire broadcast. In an extraordinary move, Steve Martin convinced the cast to go on despite the chaos, resulting in the unique episode featuring Martin and Sting – the only one of the season performed entirely without a full dress rehearsal. Later that year, production faced another hurdle when the Writers Guild of America went on strike on March 7, 1988. This unfortunate event forced the cancellation of several episodes, including one eagerly anticipated broadcast with former cast member Gilda Radner as host. Tragically, Radner would never have the opportunity to fulfill that role, passing away from ovarian cancer the following year. The planned host for the March 12th episode remained unconfirmed due to the strike’s impact.
