The Closer — Season 1
The first season introduces Los Angeles’ newly formed Priority Homicide Division (PHD), a specialized unit led by the ambitious Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson. Fresh off transfers from Atlanta and Washington D.C., Brenda arrives with an impressive background – including CIA training and a complicated history with Assistant Chief Will Pope, her former lover. Her arrival isn't welcomed; many within the LAPD view her as an outsider, and Robbery-Homicide’s Captain Taylor actively tries to force her out, even orchestrating a mass transfer request from her team. Despite this resistance, Brenda quickly proves her reputation as a relentless closer, earning the support of Sgt. David Gabriel and slowly chipping away at the skepticism of others, including the cynical Detective Lt. Andy Flynn. Throughout the season, she faces constant challenges to her authority, battling Taylor and Flynn’s attempts to sabotage her investigations. But with perseverance and skill, Brenda gradually wins over each member of her team, forging a powerful bond that culminates in a united front against Taylor's last-ditch effort to dismantle the PHD.
