Reno on Zapped

2/10 · Feb 14, 2017

I honestly couldn’t understand all the negative buzz surrounding this movie. I tend to disregard those kinds of opinions and like to give films a chance myself, which is why I watched it. I wasn't anticipating much; assuming it would be enjoyable in the way that many Disney movies are, but my expectations were completely off base. I’m truly sorry to have to agree with the critics, because this film is genuinely the worst I’ve seen in a long time. Experiencing less-than-great films is part of my viewing habits, but this one was exceptionally poor. It's been at least five years since I gave a rating this low. The storyline doesn’t offer anything particularly new compared to other Disney releases like 'Adventures in Babysitting' and 'The Swap'. Those movies were acceptable, however this one felt completely awful. The acting was hard to believe; it was a total mess, even from Zendaya. Chanelle Peloso was the only positive aspect I noticed. The character of the mean girl was particularly grating—not because of the role itself, but due to how the actress portrayed her. The film is an adaptation of the book 'Boys are Dogs', but the pacing felt incredibly slow; there was a lot of wasted time between scenes. Stretching out the movie like that was probably what allowed it to reach 90 minutes, otherwise it would have been quite short. Only Zendaya’s biggest fans might find something to appreciate in it. I don't think even children or adults will enjoy this one, so I strongly advise against watching it. I rarely use such harsh language in my reviews, and I feel bad about it, but the truth is that this film isn’t good; not even average—just plain bad. _2/10_
