Jesse Eisenberg demonstrates some strengths as a director with "When You Finish Saving the World," though the unengaging narrative and its two central characters make it hard to sit through. Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard do a good job of eliciting dislike from the audience, portraying irritatingly self-centered figures who don’t develop or change in any meaningful way. Eisenberg maintains a straightforward approach, making sure each scene has an obvious point and something important to convey. Ultimately, whether it works comes down to individual interpretation; acknowledging the absence of a positive connection between mother and son is evidence of effective storytelling. However, the final section really would have benefited from a more powerful and less understated resolution. Rating: C-
