Wuchak on When Trumpets Fade

7/10 · Oct 24, 2025

The film appeared in 1998 and depicts events that unfold solely within the forests situated along the boundary of Belgium and Germany during 1944. This restriction to a single location results in a rather limited scope, unlike something like “The Big Red One,” which unfolded across six different countries throughout the Mediterranean and Europe. The visuals feel genuine, and the difficulties faced by the characters are portrayed with care, as are the strains within their relationships. In distinction from "Battle of the Bulge" from 1965—which was filmed in Spain—this movie was shot in places resembling the actual Hurtgen Forest; namely, Lake Balaton in Hungary, located about an hour's drive southwest of Budapest. The running time is roughly one hour and thirty minutes. Some scenes were also completed in Calgary, Alberta. GRADE: B/B-
