Synopsis

On October 9th, 1963, at 10:39 pm, a massive landslide of 260 million cubic meters of rock from Mount Toc into the artificial lake created by the Vajont dam – then the world’s highest – triggered a 250-meter wave and 50 million cubic meters of water. This completely destroyed the towns below, killing over 2,000 people. The Vajont dam, designed by engineer Semenza to provide electricity to the nation, was built despite warnings. Tina Merlin, a journalist for 'L'Unitá', had spent years trying to expose the danger of building the dam near Mount Toc and the negligence of corrupt officials involved in its construction. They chose to trust the older geologist Dal Piaz over the alarming analysis of engineer Semenza’s young son. The catastrophic danger was ignored until that fateful night in October.
