What a wonderful take on Robert Louis Stevenson’s story about searching for buried treasure on an isolated island. Robert Newton is fantastic playing “Long John Silver,” a shifty, one-legged character who seems capable of anything to get what he wants, and brought in by the naive "Squire Trelawney" to assemble a group heading to Hispaniola, where it’s said Flint's treasure can be found. Bobby Driscoll does a good job as the energetic “Jim Hawkins,” and Basil Sydney, John Gregson, and Denis O’Shea round out the team of "trustworthy" officers facing off against a crew full of dangerous men. It's an exciting adventure filled with vibrant visuals and plenty of surprises. It was unexpected to see Geoffrey Keen ("Israel Hands") as a villain, and John Laurie, Finlay Currie, and Francis de Wolff all contribute to making Byron Haskin’s version the finest adaptation available. "Them's the die'll be the lucky ones!"
