This is a Spanish film that feels like something special. What would most people do if they stumbled upon evidence of a murder while working on their advanced degree? Probably turn it over to the authorities, right? That’s not what Angela does when she finds a “snuff” video—a disturbing recording showing a student from her school being brutally murdered and dismembered—while researching violence in film. The video also seems linked to her thesis advisor's sudden death. Even with its limited budget, the movie is exceptionally well-crafted, demonstrating the director Alejandro Amenábar’s considerable skill, imagination, and talent. He’s one of Spain’s finest directors, consistently producing high-quality work, though he doesn't release a film very often. I got the impression that the director incorporated elements from his own time as a student, particularly at Complutense University in Madrid. The cast isn't full of familiar faces, but having seen most of Amenábar’s films, I could recognize Eduardo Noriega and appreciate his performance as a captivating, charming, and mysterious student who might be the main villain—or maybe not (you really should see it yourself). Ana Torrent also did a good job, though her role didn't demand much. Fele Martínez was enjoyable too, bringing a refreshing irreverence and an unpredictable style to his character. Xabier Elorriaga resembled a stereotypical clueless professor, which I think suited his part well. Because this was a low-budget production, there aren’t any flashy visuals or elaborate effects. The filmmakers intended for it to be straightforward, and they clearly made the most of their resources: the sets and costumes are fairly unremarkable, but appropriate given that filming took place almost entirely on location. I seriously doubt there was anything resembling a studio used in this film's production. The music uses electronics and synthesizers, which works well and fits the era when the movie was made. Simple, effective, with strong dialogue, a solid script, an exceptional director, and capable actors: it’s truly a hidden gem.
