An eighteen-year-old girl who’s been abandoned (played by Sydney Sweeney) departs a group home and inserts herself into the lives of a younger married couple. She does this by posing as the daughter given up for adoption years earlier, a deception orchestrated by the mother (Cindy Busby). “The Wrong Daughter,” made in 2018, isn’t on par with Drew Barrymore's “Poison Ivy” when it comes to cinematic quality, but it functions adequately as a family drama that incorporates elements of crime and suspense, even if its writing is fairly straightforward. Sweeney’s career has taken off since this production, so many viewers will likely focus on her performance. She was nearly twenty during filming—she had just turned that age—but seems somewhat too slender in the role. As for me, Cindy Busby stands out as the strongest female presence; she was thirty-four at the time of shooting. (If you haven’t already, it's worth seeking out her performance in “Behemoth,” which came out seven years prior). The film manages to get under your skin and make you dislike the manipulative actions of this disturbed young woman, although the middle section can feel slow and irritating. However, the final act is quite satisfying. She’s undeniably unstable, but a degree of understanding is generated for her character, even if it's minimal. While she commits terrible acts, the writers are careful to keep them believable. Restraint proves effective. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes and was filmed in Los Angeles.
