It was an enjoyable film that I’d happily watch again, though I can’t wholeheartedly suggest it to others. The movie certainly shows its age. Val Kilmer seemed to be benefiting from his role in "Batman," and several Hollywood actors appeared to be attempting to establish themselves as the next action or spy star—perhaps in an attempt to challenge Tom Cruise's dominance, which didn’t really succeed. This international secret agent, whose background is explained at length early on, focuses on “cold fusion,” adding a science fiction element to the plot. The scientist making significant headway with cold fusion is portrayed as a "stunningly beautiful woman," Elisabeth Shue, who also has a heart condition complicating matters. While I can say that watching it was pleasant, reflecting on it reveals how absurd it all sounds. There’s a substantial amount of romantic comedy woven throughout the story, and frankly, I don't believe the filmmakers were sure what kind of movie they were making: a crime film, a science fiction discovery narrative, a romantic comedy, an action/spy thriller, political maneuvering, a religious uprising, or a tale about someone’s lost origins. The most entertaining aspects involve espionage against the Russian mafia or lighthearted romantic comedy elements, but you could likely find a more satisfying experience in other films dedicated to those genres. It's worthwhile viewing, but considering all the alternatives available, seeking out a more contemporary spy movie is probably a better choice.
