This film doesn’t feel like a “The Saint” movie to me. It bears very little connection to the character of Simon Templar as portrayed in the Roger Moore TV series. I haven't read the original books, so I can’t comment on how faithful it is to those stories, but I was let down by seeing a Simon Templar who wasn't really…himself. I’ve never been particularly fond of Val Kilmer’s performances, and I don’t believe he’s well-suited for the part. However, as I mentioned earlier, I don’t truly consider this to be a Simon Templar movie anyway. Elisabeth Shue is entirely unconvincing as a scientist; while they clearly needed someone attractive to fit the script's requirements, she doesn't quite manage it. The Russian actors deliver more believable portrayals. I did enjoy both of the Tretiak characters. That’s not to say that this is a terrible movie, though. You just need to put aside any associations with “The Saint” and Simon Templar. It's not too hard to do since he rarely refers to himself by name throughout the film. Instead, it functions as fairly enjoyable, uncomplicated entertainment about a skilled thief who has had a difficult past. I describe it as light entertainment because the story doesn’t offer much more than you would expect from an introductory episode of a TV show. There's some fun action, infiltration sequences, disguises, and high-tech gadgets—a collection of “fun stuff” that leaves you thinking, "okay, that wasn't bad" when it concludes. One last thing: I’m aware that Simon Templar used to drive a Volvo P1800, but frankly, that was the only interesting car Volvo ever produced. It’s disappointing that they chose such an unremarkable modern Volvo for him to drive, especially given how different this film is from my idea of what “The Saint” should be.
