The Ritual attempts to combine a monster film with psychological elements, and it appears to have had an adequate financial backing. The jötunn creature design is genuinely impressive, as are the recurring scenes depicting the characters’ earlier experiences involving alcohol. However, the remainder of the movie feels uninspired, much like its name, and leans heavily on the perceived strangeness of the remote Swedish wilderness. Even that aspect doesn't quite work, and the cult members at the story's conclusion feel like generic Wiccans from Scotland instead of authentic pre-Christian figures from northern Scandinavia.
