Sheriff “Cass” (Robert Ryan) does his best to maintain peace in a small frontier town, until someone from his history shows up and disrupts the stability he's worked so hard to create. “Barrett,” oddly referred to as "Honest" (Robert Middleton), comes to town with plans for growth. At first, it seems like things might go his way when an initial fight between “Cass” and one of Barrett’s men results in the sheriff getting hit on the head. Soon after, he experiences headaches and blurred vision, and just as he feels things couldn't get worse for him and his fiancée "Sally" (Virginia Mayo), “Thad” (Jeffrey Hunter) arrives. He’s bringing cattle but also has a reason to confront “Cass,” believing that the sheriff killed his father. With his eyesight deteriorating and “Honest” sensing an opportunity to solidify his grip on a town populated by mostly weak and self-serving people, “Cass” needs to persuade young “Thad” that his father wasn’t who he believed him to be and perhaps consider becoming a lawman himself. Despite not having many scenes, it's Middleton’s smooth and refined character that helps distinguish this western from the typical formulaic ones. Ryan performs well portraying a man struggling with failing vision and its impact on his usefulness—to both the town and the woman he loves. Hunter is adequate enough, and Mayo, I feel, seems to only receive roles intended to showcase her smile but not much else; there are some moments in the film that keep the action as the primary focus. It was unexpected how little Walter Brennan appeared, though it’s still a pleasant movie with an undercurrent of menace throughout.
