A community’s ambition leads to its downfall. The Proud Ones comes from director Robert D. Webb, with a screenplay by Edmund H. North and Joseph Petracca based on the Verne Athanas novel. The film includes performances by Robert Ryan, Jeffrey Hunter, Virginia Mayo, Robert Middleton, Walter Brennan, Arthur O'Connell, Ken Clark, and Rodolfo Acosta. It’s presented in De Luxe Color/Cinemascope, with a score composed by Lionel Newman and photography by Lucien Ballard. Flat Rock, Kansas, anticipates wealth thanks to the arrival of the railroad and cattle drives. Cass Silver (Ryan), the town’s stern marshal, foresees difficulties—and he isn't wrong. This is a well-crafted Western featuring a talented cast and vibrant widescreen visuals from a skilled cinematographer. The plot doesn’t offer anything entirely new; it echoes more familiar genre films of the nineteen fifties, although an underlying oedipal motif provides another layer. To avoid predictable storytelling, the filmmakers introduce a physical challenge for their tough marshal—occasional dizziness and vision loss—which occurs at an especially inconvenient time as Cass Silver must confront Flat Rock’s troublemakers single-handedly. Or does he? Jeffrey Hunter appears as a young man seeking revenge on Cass because his father, an outlaw, was supposedly killed by the marshal. This is where the oedipal element enters, adding substance to what might otherwise be a standard plot. It's solid Western filmmaking, with plenty of action driven by male bravado, moments of contemplation and longing, all leading up to a thrilling conclusion. The film doesn’t offer many unexpected turns, and Mayo and Brennan seem underutilized, but it warrants greater recognition and shouldn’t simply be dismissed as a copy of High Noon. Robert Ryan is excellent, consistently bringing both authority and weariness to his roles. It earns a rating of 7.5/10
