It’s laughable to suggest anything bad could come from reading a book—you know how those stories go. Following the financial success of "The Mummy" two years prior, a sequel was practically guaranteed. Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo and Oded Fehr all return in significant roles. Stephen Sommers directs (and also wrote the script), Patricia Velasquez joins as a main character after having appeared briefly in the first movie, and Freddie Boath appears as the son of Rick and Evelyn, who are now married. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has a cameo as The Scorpion King, though he’s later replaced by a noticeably flawed computer-generated version of himself at the end. When "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008) came out, Brendan Fraser mentioned that they essentially recreated the 1999 film for “The Mummy Returns.” And it's really true! They added some new characters and developed the romance between Rick and Evelyn a little more, plus there are Zombie Pygmies to provide additional monster action, but overall, it’s just a rehash—albeit one with a bigger budget, enhanced effects (aside from The Scorpion King), and increased volume. It's perfectly fine for people who really loved the first film because "Returns" is still good family entertainment. The worldwide box office total exceeded $330 million in profit. You’d imagine that meant a lot of satisfied families!. So, yeah, it feels like something of a trick, but just as with the original, it manages to work because the filmmakers do their best to keep the action/adventure audience happy. With plenty of Anubis warriors, those impressive Pygmies, and the consistently amusing interactions between a cast familiar with the material, "The Mummy Returns" provides exactly what one would reasonably expect from it. 7/10
