It’s not really horror – it’s just a very good time for the whole family. Stephen Sommers directed "The Mummy," and he also co-wrote the script with John L. Balderston. The cast includes Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo & Kevin J. O'Connor. Jerry Goldsmith composed the score, and Adrian Biddle handled the cinematography. The story follows Fraser as ex-Foreign Legionnaire adventurer Rick O’Connell, who joins forces with Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan (Weisz) and her brother Jonathan (Hannah), to try and prevent a disaster caused by releasing the mummified remains of High Priest Imhotep (Vosloo). It's fair to say that "Indiana Jones" set a high standard for action/adventure films involving treasure, artifacts, and mystical dangers. It’s probably true enough to claim that “Raiders of the Lost Ark” established such a benchmark that it’s unlikely anyone will surpass it. Several movies similar to those have appeared since "Indiana Jones," sharing one thing in common: critics tend to dislike them, even though audiences spend money to see them at the cinema. "The Mummy" is among these films. Universal revived their own 1930s monster to create a high-energy adventure packed with effects, humor, stunts and visual thrills. It’s like “Indiana Jones,” but so what? The script might not be brilliant, however, for sheer boldness, construction of action sequences, and an interesting plot, it provides enjoyable entertainment for the whole family. The actors are good; Fraser easily embodies a heroic character, and Weisz is appropriately sophisticated, spirited, and attractive. Hannah seems to enjoy playing a ne'er-do-well, while Arnold Vosloo appears to be having fun too. Ultimately though, it’s the effects that stand out—they’re explosive and visually impressive. Sommers and his team clearly prioritized entertainment for adventure film fans of all ages. 7.5/10
