I’ve never gotten why some people feel the need to avoid giving movies either the highest or lowest possible rating. A film should simply succeed or fail in what it sets out to do. *The Mule* is exactly the sort of picture my father, who has since passed away, would have wanted me to see with him and then talk about afterward. It centers on an isolated elderly man who bends a few rules to support his family, which unfortunately leads to problems with some dangerous individuals. The film manages this without relying on flashy action sequences or elaborate visual effects; instead, it depends entirely on the quality of the writing and performances. Essentially, it’s a throwback to older styles of filmmaking, understated, and truthfully, enjoyable to experience. It also has substance—there's an actual storyline and a lesson to be learned, which isn’t something you see very often these days.
