Clint Eastwood portrays “Earl Stone,” an older man who’s deeply proud of his prize-winning flowers but finds himself struggling financially and facing the possibility of losing everything. Needing to make money, he accepts a job as a delivery person. A veteran of the Korean War, he isn't entirely clear on what he is transporting, but understands that avoiding police attention is crucial. His success quickly grows, bringing with it an unwelcome protector. As his financial anxieties lessen, personal issues begin to surface—his former spouse and granddaughter, both of whom have felt neglected by him. The DEA also suspects something unusual is happening, and “Agent Bates” (Bradley Cooper) and his team start concentrating their attention on the central figure as they close in. This isn't among Eastwood’s finest works; however, considering he is 88 years old, any criticism should perhaps take that into account—most people have stopped trying by then. The film moves at a deliberate pace, occasionally feeling slow, and the characters don’t quite come to life. The pursuing agents and his cartel connections remain on the edges of the story, failing to significantly enhance what is essentially Eastwood embodying a role reminiscent of John Wayne's in "True Grit" (1969)—that of a resolute elderly man—and he performs it effectively.
