It makes you think that perhaps only someone like Clint Eastwood could have managed to bring this film into existence. I delayed watching it for quite some time, influenced somewhat by the unfavorable comments circulating online. I believe my enjoyment of the movie stemmed from the very things that bothered those who criticized it. It’s remarkable how many established filmmakers possess the influence to produce a project that, despite featuring a violent Mexican drug cartel as part of its narrative, ultimately becomes a contemplative and largely subdued exploration of an elderly man confronting his past mistakes in relationships with his family. This kind of storyline even goes against the trend of the action-packed films that initially propelled Eastwood to fame. It’s not something I envision revisiting anytime soon—there are simply too many other movies vying for my attention. Nevertheless, it proved enjoyable and stands as a worthwhile contribution to the collection of varied works directed by the iconic actor.
