The premise of The Menu initially seems promising, but any anticipation quickly fades as the story turns out to be distressingly foreseeable from very early on. It’s possible to guess where things are headed well in advance, and the purported surprises fall flat—they lack any real punch. The performances are the one bright spot, with Anna Taylor-Joy, Ralph Fiennes, and Nicholas Hoult all appearing, although even they don't seem fully engaged. What’s sad is how little material they have to work with. It feels like the film’s appeal rests solely on the actors involved, because the storyline itself doesn’t offer anything new or unexpected. Ultimately, it’s a significant disappointment, particularly given the caliber of the performers and the resulting lackluster effect.
