“The Menu” presents an examination of anti-capitalist themes alongside bursts of violence, all orchestrated by a meticulous chef who commands a devoted following. Mark Mylod’s horror comedy critiques both the pretentiousness found in fine dining and the nature of performance art itself. Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and her boyfriend, Tyler (Nicholas Hoult), board a vessel with several other patrons headed to Hawthorn, an exclusive restaurant located on a secluded island. The avant-garde head chef (Ralph Fiennes) caters to a wealthy clientele, providing food and artistic presentations that surpass any conventional culinary offering. Upon arrival, the guests are given a tour of the island’s grounds where ingredients are cultivated and seafood is harvested. Once inside the restaurant, dishes are presented alongside explanations from the chef detailing their meaning within the larger dining experience. As the meal progresses, the narratives become increasingly disturbing and intense, leaving the diners apprehensive about their safety. Prior to the last course, a sous chef mentions that the menu needs "an ending that ties everything together conceptually." It then becomes apparent that the restaurant staff unquestioningly obeys the head chef’s instructions, mirroring the behavior of those who adhere to a cult leader's commands. “The Menu” creates an uncomfortable atmosphere and elicits some awkward reactions, but it manages to incorporate sufficient humor and satire for a generally pleasant viewing experience.
