I went into The Menu because of all the buzz surrounding it; people seemed to think it was brilliant. However, my reaction after seeing it was simply, "Huh?" It felt like something started with a strong sense of unease that didn’t quite resolve itself by the end. The film initially had a similar feel to Ready or Not, centering on someone who doesn't belong among a group of wealthy food enthusiasts and critics at an exclusive restaurant. The previews suggested a storyline involving cannibalism or a hunt like in Most Dangerous Game, but the actual plot didn’t really go anywhere. I grasped what the filmmakers were aiming for with some underlying message, yet I still felt let down. While Anya Taylor-Joy and the other actors did a commendable job, it was hard to find anything that truly unified the film. Perhaps the unexpected departure from those initial expectations—the avoidance of cannibalism or a hunting scenario—was intended as the clever part? The Menu certainly attempted to be witty, though whether it succeeded might depend on how you look at things. It’s strange because I watched the entire movie and still felt like something was missing; I left feeling unsatisfied.
