The Menu ended up being one of my biggest letdowns this year. While Mark Mylod’s film features strong performances from everyone involved—Ralph Fiennes and Nicholas Hoult were particularly noteworthy—very little else about it connects. The attempts at humor largely missed the mark, with only a few scenes reminiscent of Masterchef Australia providing some amusement. The screenplay takes predictable turns, functioning as a mystery that fails to deliver any real surprises. I didn't find the characters very developed, and the criticism of the wealthy felt obvious and unimportant. I suspect it will still be viewed favorably by many people. Rating: C-
