This installment of "The Love Bug," appearing as the fourth sequel to the 1969 original and the fifth entry overall, feels constrained by its television-level production budget. The limitations are noticeable in things like the studio sets and the absence of a large crowd, but the story itself is stronger than many that came before it, perhaps only slightly less entertaining than "Herbie Goes Bananas" (1980), which remains my personal favorite among them all, despite its generally unfavorable reputation among enthusiasts. The plot centers on Herbie’s capture by a new owner, portrayed by Bruce Campbell, who finds himself astonished at the Volkswagen's surprising ability to win races and perform extraordinary feats. A scornful competitor, played by John Hannah, initially ridiculed Herbie but now desperately wants it and concocts a plan involving Herbie’s creator, Harold Gould, in an attempt to replicate the car’s magic—though the outcome isn't quite what he hoped for. Kevin J. O'Connor takes on the role of the mechanic, Alexandra Wentworth serves as a racing judge, and Dana Gould appears as the villain’s assistant. There are several memorable moments that elevate this film above its predecessors. The movie provides insight into Herbie’s creation and how it gained sentience—something the earlier films only hinted at with vague speculation. An unexpected storyline involving death and revival unfolds, Dean Jones reprises his role as Jim Douglas, who was 65 years old during filming, and a sinister counterpart to Herbie, named Horace, emerges. Alexandra Wentworth stands out as arguably the best female character in the series so far, closely followed by Elyssa Davalos from the previous film. The movie has a running time of one hour and 28 minutes and was filmed in Los Angeles. GRADE: B
