It’s hard to imagine a worse illustration of Netflix spending vast sums for actors who seem promising initially, but ultimately disappoint. The problems aren't solely attributable to them; the script is both shallow and confusing, and the filmmaking feels scattered. Storylines involving a journalist—Anne Hathaway plays "Elena"—who travels to Central America to investigate a tale of deceit and spying by the US government and agencies, don’t connect properly—there's no foundation for viewers to engage with! It seems unlikely Ben Affleck is in desperate need of money, and while Toby Jones did elicit some amusement, it’s unclear if that was intentional. The source material is reportedly quite good, so how this adaptation went wrong remains a mystery, but future projects should prioritize strong storytelling and dialogue to justify the expense of hiring well-known performers.
