Synopsis

Driven by ambition, scientist Franz Walter readily accepts a professorship, pledging allegiance to the East German system and agreeing to work for the country's intelligence service before starting. Alongside his colleague Dirk, he's dispatched to West Germany on assignments. Franz soon resorts to blackmail to extract information, but his superiors demand increasingly unethical actions: targeting refugees and their families with psychological manipulation, forged documents, surveillance, and wiretapping. Overwhelmed by these demands, Franz becomes isolated and feels powerless. He attempts to steal secret documents for a planned escape to the West, triggering a series of events that lead to his arrest and execution.
