As World War II winds down, Jack (played by John Henshaw) finds himself dabbling in the black market, and a trip to a British POW camp leads him to Bert Trautmann (David Kross), who he recognizes as being remarkably talented at goalkeeping. Jack gets him involved in some local games, and after the war’s conclusion, a trial with Manchester City appears to give Trautmann the possibility of starting over. Understandably, there's significant opposition from locals regarding a former enemy now playing for their team, but an endorsement from his new wife Margaret—Jack's pragmatic daughter—and another from an unexpected source allows him a chance to demonstrate his abilities on the field. We know from historical records that he achieved considerable success with the club, appearing over five hundred times, however this film concentrates more on the personal aspects of his story - and in that regard, misfortune seemed constantly present. The political issues are touched upon, but mainly to show how football can act as a unifying force. Audiences, like people generally, can be unpredictable; offenses might be overlooked, or at least put aside, if someone becomes an important part of a successful team and brings about a welcome sense of optimism. Kross does a good job portraying the inherent goodness in Trautmann’s character, and while it's admittedly rather sentimental, it remains a well-shot film that tells the story of a man who ultimately took on a far more significant role in post-war relations between Britain and Germany than anyone might have predicted back in 1945.
