The film explores similar territory to the original Karate Kid, though instead of karate, it focuses on kung fu. The humor and serious moments are well-balanced. While the action sequences aren’t particularly memorable, there wasn’t a huge amount, especially for Jaden; he mostly gets involved toward the end. However, that's sufficient given the intended audience of children. Jaden Smith delivers an impressive performance. I thought Will and Jada Pinkett made a smart choice supporting their son's career, because like his parents, he’s a talented actor capable in both comedic and dramatic roles. He did a solid job overall, and there were even some charming moments involving him that I really enjoyed. Jackie Chan is naturally fantastic as well. His character is an older man, but that didn’t prevent him from participating in a fight scene. We're all familiar with his excellent comedic timing, but I was particularly struck by his dramatic acting here; it's a different side of Jackie Chan. That’s what makes him so remarkable – he consistently finds ways to surprise viewers. Jaden’s opponent is also very good—quite intimidating. However, the behind-the-scenes photos at the end revealed that he isn't scary at all and seems like a friendly guy who gets along with Jaden. I would give this movie an A grade. It’s enjoyable for everyone, and I'm not shocked it did so well in theaters.
