Kamurai on The Jungle Book

6/10 · Jul 17, 2020

It's a genuinely enjoyable film that I’d happily watch again and suggest to others. I would even say this version is better than the original from 1967. While it isn't quite as endearing as the earlier movie, and its animation style is noticeably different, both possess an impressive level of detail. You can really appreciate the cg effects—from the individual strands of fur to the variety of animals depicted (my research on Indian wildlife has been extensive today)—the details are striking. Just watching the end credit sequence demonstrates this. There are three significant enhancements compared to other versions: Sher Khan’s appearance, King Louie, and the intensity of the animal fight scenes. The movie isn't without its flaws; I expect some viewers will have questions about the talking animals versus those that don't talk, and how he would learn their language (and therefore understand characters like Sher Khan or Baloo). I believe the writing suffered a bit. The original film had subtle but powerful fable-like sequences—essentially moral stories with shifting character focus—while this one follows a structure more akin to video game narratives: serialized chapters with some progression of power and changes in setting and objectives, all centered on Mowgli. It’s not poorly written, but the way this Jungle kid solves problems (the film never reveals his backstory, which was actually refreshing) using vines, pulleys, armor (which seems impractical), and precise positioning is remarkable. I get that some people are naturally gifted at certain things, but it made me wonder if I could do the same. I probably could, but I’d have to approach it differently. And honestly, some of his illogical and inconsistent actions—especially considering how proactive this version's Mowgli is—bothered me: there were times when I found myself rooting for Sher Khan. Overall, I enjoyed it, and I believe most people, maybe even their pets, will too (my cats seemed interested for a while).
