This film, *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*, suggests a team that could very well spearhead the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while also creating something unique: a story centered on feelings, with impressive visuals, and rooted in genuine emotion. The music composed by Michael Giacchino creates an unsettling atmosphere, and the retro-futuristic design really draws you in—not to mention how good the actors are together. Despite some minor problems, there’s a remarkable sense of unity within this origin story. Vanessa Kirby conveys a lot through her face, Pedro Pascal deals with difficult personal situations, and Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach both display a surprising amount of openness, all demonstrating a real attention to the characters' humanity. If these are indeed just the beginning, it’s clear they’re on solid ground—and there’s something special about them. Rating: B+
