I thought this was a really enjoyable vigilante film. Denzel Washington delivers an excellent performance as McCall, portraying him as someone who's both detached and thoughtful while still being a vigilante. The pacing is slower than many films in the genre, but it doesn’t make it dull, and when the action sequences arrive, they are deliberate—for this type of movie—and well-executed. There’s an overarching plot concerning McCall’s initial act of vigilantism that carries through the film, though he also undertakes some smaller assignments along the way. I appreciate the vigilante elements, so these extra scenes felt like a welcome addition to flesh out the story. The central conflict involves McCall facing off against a genuinely psychotic Russian enforcer. It's hard to deny that this movie features a well-developed antagonist; the role is very effectively played and the character is unsettling, to say the least—not to mention violent, as is McCall when he decides to act. What I particularly liked was that McCall isn’t just another character who runs around looking dangerous and resorting to sporadic bursts of violence. He consistently remains composed, thoughtful, and acts with intelligence, and the villains often don't realize their error until it’s far too late. Granted, McCall’s ability to handle bad guys—usually without sustaining any injuries himself—approaches superhuman levels, but that’s expected, as it is a work of fiction. Completely realistic movies aren't usually entertaining, especially not films in this genre. I did feel the final confrontation, where the antagonists seemed to be wandering around haphazardly and getting eliminated, could have been stronger, particularly given how intelligent the Russian mobster had appeared earlier on. Still, I appreciated that it didn’t devolve into a typical lengthy shootout. McCall continues his cold and calculated campaign against those who deserve it, and the methods he uses to deal with them are quite inventive. Overall, I found this to be a very entertaining movie. It's familiar vigilante territory, which is something I enjoy, but it stands apart from standard entries in the genre due to Denzel Washington’s intelligent and detached depiction of McCall.
